In approximately 3.5 hours you will be driven in comfortable transport from Aswan to Abu Simbel.
The Great Temple of Abu Simbel is most famous for the four imposing seated colossal statues that dominate its façade. Colossal standing statues of the king line the main hall, leading to the shrine where four deities sit: Amun Ra, Ra Horakhty, Ptah and a deified version of Ramses II. Another rock-cut temple to the north, known as the Little Temple, is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and the great royal wife of Ramses II, Queen Nefertari. The relocation of the temples was a historic event in the 1960s. At that time, the temples were threatened by immersion in Lake Nasser when the High Dam was built. They were successfully relocated to a location 60 meters above the cliff where they were originally built. A striking feature is that on two days of the year, the 22nd of February and 22nd of October, the first rays of the morning sun illuminate the entire length of the temple and illuminate the images of the four gods at the end of the cave.
