The catacombs of Kom al-Shuqafa date back to Egypt’s Roman times (30 BC – 395 AD) and were discovered in 1900. There are richly decorated sarcophagi and Medusa heads and at the front of the main burial chamber is a temple-like façade consisting of two columns supporting an architrave with a relief of a central winged solar disk flanked by Horus falcons.
Pompey’s Pillar (Diocletian’s Column – late 290 AD), stands right next to the remains of the Serapeum, the main temple of Serapis, the national god of ancient Egypt during this period. The monument stands some 26.85 m (88.1 ft) high, including its base and capital, and originally would have supported a statue some 7 m (23 ft.) tall.
The New Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), is an important library and cultural center. Founded as a reminder of the classical Library of Alexandria, it contains 6 museums, the most important of which is the Museum of Antiquities, which houses 1,080 pieces from different eras and civilizations passed by Egypt.
Qaitbay Citadel was built by the Mamluk sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay (between 882 AH/1477 AD and 884/1479 AD) over the ruins of the Alexandria lighthouse. An outer wall plotted with defensive towers surrounds the building.
