How to Learn Bangla or Bengali The Only Guide You’ll Need

Persian is also thought to have influenced many grammatical forms. In this sense, all nouns in Bengali, unlike most other Indo-European languages, are similar to mass nouns. Wh-questions are formed by fronting the wh-word to focus position, which is typically the first or second word in the utterance.

The productive vocabulary used in modern literary works, is made up mostly (67 percent) of tôdbhôbo words, while tôtshômo only make up 25 percent of the total. A large proportion of these 100,000 words are archaic or highly technical, minimizing their actual usage. Bengali has as many as 100,000 separate words, of which 50,000 (67 percent) are considered tôtshômo (direct reborrowings from Sanskrit), 21,100 (28 percent) are tôdbhôbo (derived from Sanskrit words), and the rest are bideshi (foreign) and deshi words. Non-finite verbs have no inflection for tense or person, while finite verbs are fully inflected for person (first, second, third), tense (present, past, future), aspect (simple, perfect, progressive), and honor (intimate, familiar, and formal), but not for number.

  • Learn words that relate to a specific context that you’re trying to understand.
  • With nearly 300 million total speakers, Bengali is one of the most spoken languages (ranking sixth) in the world.
  • In compound sentences, the connecting words have the least stress.
  • Because of centuries of contact with Europeans, Turkic peoples, and Persians, Bengali has absorbed numerous words from foreign languages, often totally integrating these borrowings into the core vocabulary.
  • In Sylhet and Bankura, modified versions of the Kaithi script had some historical prominence, mainly among Muslim communities.

The Bengali scholar Muhammad Shahidullah and his followers offered a competing theory, suggesting that the language began in the 7th century ce and developed from spoken and written Gauda (also, respectively, a Prakrit and an Apabhramsha). The Bengali linguists Suniti Kumar Chatterji and Sukumar Sen suggested that Bengali had its origin in the 10th century ce, deriving from Magahi Prakrit (a spoken language) through Magahi Apabhramsha (its written counterpart). Close contact with neighboring peoples facilitated the borrowing of words from Hindi, Assamese, Chinese, Burmese, and several indigenous Austroasiatic languages (like Santali) of Bengal. Due to centuries of contact with Europeans, Mughals, Arabs, Turks, Persians, Afghans, and East Asians, Bengali has borrowed many words from foreign languages. Most final consonant clusters were borrowed into Bengali from English, as in লিফ্ট lifţ “lift, elevator” and ব্যাংক bêņk “bank.” However, final clusters do exist in some native Bengali words, although rarely in standard pronunciation. Native Bengali (tôdbhôb) words do not allow initial consonant clusters; the maximum syllabic structure is CVC (i.e., one vowel flanked by a consonant on each side).

Examples are লক্ষ্মণ (written as lakṣmaṇa but pronounced as lokkhōn “Lakshman”), বিশ্বাস (written as biśbāsa but pronounced as biśśaś “belief”), বাধ্য (written as bādhya but pronounced as baddhō “obliged”) and স্বাস্থ্য (written as sbāsthya but pronounced as śasthō “health”). In most of the consonant clusters, only the first consonant is pronounced and bdcrazytime.com/login rest of the consonants are silent. Another kind of inconsistency is concerned with the incomplete coverage of phonological information in the script. In spite of some modifications in the 19th century, the Bengali spelling system continues to be based on the one used for Sanskrit, and thus does not take into account some sound mergers that have occurred in the spoken language. In general, the script is fairly transparent for “tadbhav” words (native Bengali words). But the script is fairly opaque for phoneme-to-grapheme conversion, i.e., it is often quite difficult to predict the spelling from the pronunciation of the words.

Sequence The order of words in Bangla is what is called left branching, ie, adjectives are placed on the left of nouns; and adverbs precede the verbs. It borrows -ta (-তা), -tv (-ত্ব), -ima (-ইমা) very often from Sanskrit for substantive formation. The formation of the substantive with affixes is not an unlimited proposition in Bangla. Compound verbs are formed with verbs like uth (উঠ্), pad (পড়্), phel (ফেল্), thak (থাক্) and the like placed after completive or inchoative conjunctives, as in ka’re otha (ক’রে ওঠা), base pada (বসে পড়া), bale phela (বলে ফেলা), etc. Another set of verbs like dakadaki (ডাকাডাকি), ghoraghuri (ঘোরাঘুরি) is formed in compliance with the rules of correlative compounds. The word-final sound determines where the ending should be in -r or -er, and -te or -ete.

Verbs

These allographs, called kars (cf. Hindi matras) are dependent vowel forms and cannot stand on their own. A consonant sound followed by some vowel sound other than ɔ is orthographically realized by using a variety of vowel allographs above, below, before, after, or around the consonant sign, thus forming the ubiquitous consonant-vowel ligature. Rather, it is written in the Bengali abugida, a variant of the Eastern Nagari script used throughout Bangladesh and eastern India. This is known as the Bongali sublanguage, or more informally as Chattagram bangla. Other parts of West Bengal and west Bangladesh speak in dialects that are minor variations, such as the Medinipur dialect characterized by some unique words and constructions.

It is also closely related to the Devanagari alphabet, from which it started to diverge in the 11th Century AD. The Bengali alphabet (বাংলা লিপি – Bangla lipi) is derived from the Brahmi alphabet. There are some differences in pronunciation and vocabulary between the Bengali of Bangladesh and the Bengali spoken in India. It is recognized as a secondary language in Karachi in Pakistan.
